The DCEU’s in a bit of trouble right now, that’s no secret. Justice League failed to impress both critically and financially and the studio’s future slate is looking a bit uncertain right now. Though they did announce what’s coming down the pipeline the other week at Comic-Con Experience Brazil, we’ve also heard that some of those films may not end up actually coming to fruition. If there is one project though that’s definitely a priority for Warner Bros., it’s Flashpoint.
For those who don’t know, in comic book lore, the “Flashpoint” arc sees Barry Allen zip back in time to save his mother, but he inadvertently triggers a domino effect that spreads throughout the DC Universe. And so, Thomas and Martha wind up surviving that infamous mugging, but the untimely death of Bruce leads the Wayne family down two very separate tracks: one to vigilantism, the other to sheer, unbridled villainy.
When it comes to the DCEU, Flashpoint looks to be a kind of backdoor sequel for Justice League. As well as Gal Gadot returning as Wonder Woman, evidence suggests it’s going to feature not one, but two Batmen. Jeffrey Dean Morgan continues to tease that he’ll reprise his role as Thomas Wayne from Batman V Superman – this time actually getting to play an alternate version of the Dark Knight – and rumour has it Ben Affleck will turn up as Bruce Wayne. This will likely be his final appearance in the DCEU, too, following all the talk about him being recast for The Batman.
Chalk that up as speculation for now, but while we wait to hear more on the project, one very talented fan has put together a gorgeous poster for Flashpoint that features Morgan’s Batman front and center. Surrounding him we have a whole host of familiar faces, including Wonder Woman, Shazam, Deathstroke, Superman in his black suit, The Flash and more, making for a pretty exciting one-sheet that’s sure to please fans.
In the time since the original comic book released, the “Flashpoint” arc has been quite faithfully adapted as an animated movie, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and served as loose inspiration for season 3 of The Flash TV series. But even with those existing, seeing it realized with a massive Hollywood budget is enough to make us hyperventilate and this poster only heightens our excitement for the pic that much more.
Unfortunately, though we keep hearing that Flashpoint is a priority for the studio, there’s still a ways to go before it can start production in earnest. At present, no director is attached, but a script by Joby Harold is said to be complete and if the project really is as important to WB as we’ve been told, we imagine that they’ll get moving on it soon. Which could mean that everything will be ready to go early next year.
We’ll continue to keep you posted as more comes to light, but in the meantime, tell us, what are you hoping to see from Flashpoint? Take to the comments section down below and share your thoughts!
