Universal has revealed the release dates for two of its upcoming Blumhouse Productions titles: Jem And The Holograms and Cybernatural.
The former will land in theatres on October 23rd, 2015 as a live-action reboot of the animated series. That joyful Saturday morning cartoon, based on the Hasbro toy line, sprang to life in the 80s and its very existence has plagued this writer on practically a daily basis ever since.
But enough about me, what about this live-action update? The direction in which Universal intend to steer the project is very intriguing, as the flick is set to be produced by Jason Blum and his spooky cohorts at Blumhouse. You know, that team of scaremongers who’ve made sure that no adult can shrug at a PG-13 rating ever again thanks to Insidious.
From what we know, it’s going to have little to no-scares whatsoever, instead telling the story of “a small-town girl who is catapulted from underground video sensation to global superstar. She and her three sisters begin a one-in-a-million journey of discovering that some talents are too special to keep hidden.” So far, it seems it will remain in-line with the cartoon except for its human cast. On board to bring Jem’s rock n’roll adventure to the big screen are Aubrey Peeples, Stefanie Scott, Aurora Perrineau, Hayley Kiyoko, Ryan Guzman, Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis.
Now, the second item on Universal’s press release is the Timur Bekmambetov-produced horror thriller, Cybernatural, slated for release on April 10th, 2015. It’s a relatively new addition to the studio’s roster, as they caught wind of the flick at a screening during the Fantasia International Film Festival. After witnessing the enthusiastic audience reaction, they snapped up the rights immediately.
The idea behind the flick is “that the story is told in real time from the point of view of a teen girl’s computer. The girl and her friends are stalked by an unseen figure who seeks vengeance for a shaming video that led a vicious bully to kill herself a year earlier.” This indeed sounds like a far more Blum-centric outing, and one that we’re most excited to see when it hits theatres next Spring.
