Marvel Studios is doing everything they can to keep spoilers for Avengers 4 to a minimum – they haven’t even told us what the title of the movie is yet. While we don’t expect for the stars of the MCU to start spilling the beans in interviews, then – at least, unless Mark Ruffalo or Tom Holland make another slip-up – they can still hype up next May’s sure-to-be blockbuster.
The latest to do so is Jeremy Renner, who’s set to return as Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye. While chatting with USA Today recently to promote his new project Tag, he was prompted for what he can say about Avengers 4. The actor, who’s been with the franchise since 2011’s Thor, admitted that he and his co-stars have “to bite their tongue,” but did promise that “it’s going to be awesome.”
“Everybody’s got to bite their tongue. But if you like Infinity War, there’s some stuff to come. What I do know is it’s going to be awesome.”
Infamously, Renner never showed up in Avengers: Infinity War, which caused a stir among fans who felt that one of the six founding members of the titular team was being short-changed. In particular, the lack of Hawkeye in the promotional material for the movie before it was released created a sizeable backlash. When asked for his opinions about this, Renner said that he was touched by the response but felt bad for the Russo brothers, who were bombarded with hate.
“It’s a nice feeling, I suppose. I think the Russo brothers (Anthony and Joe, who directed) got way too many death threats. I’m like, “Wow, dude, that’s intense. I’m sorry!””
Those fans left disgruntled by the lack of Hawkeye in Infinity War can rest assured that Agent Barton will get much more to do in Avengers 4. Set photos and leaks have revealed that he’ll likely become Ronin in the film, earning himself a new suit and a mohawk haircut. So, we know he survived the Snap, at least, but will he make it through until Phase Four? Time will tell, but it certainly seems so, as Marvel’s apparently considering a solo vehicle for Renner.
