According to John Boyega, Star Wars: Episode IX will put the ‘war’ back into Star Wars.
While The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi showed the First Order consolidating their power and the Resistance struggling to gather their forces, the final instalment of the third trilogy in the franchise is set to take things to explosive new heights. This scoop comes courtesy of Star Wars News Net, which was reporting on a conference call featuring Boyega at Awesome Con.
During the call, here’s what he said:
“Next for me filming wise is Star Wars: Episode IX in July, and they’ve officially given us a note to start training soon. I’m going to take a holiday before that, because I think Episode IX you know, regardless of where the story goes, and I haven’t read it by the way, is going to be all out war so I know that I’m going to have to do all I can and train for that.”
It probably should be noted that Boyega admits he hasn’t actually read J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio’s script, but you have to assume he’s got a bit more insight into what might happen than your average Joe. Right?
After the events of The Last Jedi, my interest in Star Wars is at an all-time high. I was a bit blase after The Force Awakens, figuring that Disney’s first trilogy was going to be a safer-than-safe retreading of the Original Trilogy. Rian Johnson blew all that out of the water though, steering the franchise away from familiarity and into exciting new directions. If Boyega’s prediction comes true, we should expect to see Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren and Domnhall Gleeson’s General Hux vying for control of the incredibly powerful First Order while the Resistance rebuilds their shattered forces as quickly as they can.
December 20th, 2019 still feels like a long way away right now, but with Solo: A Star Wars Story due in just over two months, I’m sure that time will fly by. And, with shooting set to begin soon, let’s hope for some leaks that’ll point to which direction Star Wars: Episode IX is headed in.
