John Goodman has today joined the cast of Kong: Skull Island, the upcoming King Kong prequel which is going to build to an eventual crossover with the Godzilla franchise. So far, the cast includes Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and John C. Reilly, and Goodman is the latest impressive addition to the movie after Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons were forced to pass due to scheduling conflicts (production is set to begin later this Fall).
The actor is set to play Randa, a government official who leads an expedition. Deadline also has a very brief synopsis of the movie, and while it’s fairly vague, Kong: Skull Island sounds a lot different to what many of us were expecting.
The story is about a man (Hiddleston) who travels to the mythical island after his brother is stranded there trying to retrieve the mythical serum Titan which is believed to be the cure for all illnesses and diseases. The man must lead a rescue team to save his brother while confronting the creatures that inhabit the island.
One of those creatures will of course be King Kong, and rumour has it that Kong: Skull Island will be set during the 1980s, so it’s clearly going to deliver a very different take on this iconic beast.
Kong: Skull Island is set to be released on March 10th, 2017. The movie apparently aims to fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island.
