Today we have our first look (seen above) at John Travolta, Christopher Plummer and Tye Sheridan in Philip Martin’s The Forger, an upcoming heist film penned by Richard D’Ovidio. It tells the story of Ray Cutter (Travolta), a “former child art prodigy and second generation petty thief.” In the cliche of all cliches, Ray “buys his way” out of jail in hopes of spending time with his son (Sheridan), who is in poor health, but ends up getting roped into the proverbial “one last job” with his father (Plummer).
Despite the promising cast, and the fact that I’m always up for a good heist film, The Forger just seems so bland and recycled. That plot is literally as cliched as it gets and lacks any originality or ingenuity. Of course, I might just be judging a book by its cover and Martin might have something very clever brewing beneath the surface. Going by what we know so far though, I wouldn’t count on it.
The Forger is currently in post-production and the rights are being sold at the European Film Market. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
