With Us now quickly approaching its release date, the highly anticipated sophomore outing from Get Out helmsman Jordan Peele has finally had some of the secrecy surrounding it lifted. Back in December, we got our first look at what might just be 2019’s most exciting horror film and today, the pic has received a new Super Bowl trailer which reveals even more.
Arriving online a bit early, it’s a short but totally terrifying glimpse at the film which gives us a few additional pieces of what’s shaping up to be a very, very intriguing puzzle. Chilling, unsettling and full of evocative imagery, the promo paints a promising picture of the horror to come and has us feeling pretty confident that Us will be a worthy follow-up to Get Out.
Or at least, we hope it is. After all, Peele has set the bar pretty high for his next effort, which has to follow in the footsteps of an Oscar-winning movie that earned the respect of viewers and organizations that normally wouldn’t give horror films a second glance.
Then again, Us isn’t exactly courting the same crowds, with Peele previously explaining that with this particular outing, he really “wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre,” while still holding onto his love of films that are “twisted but fun.” Moreover, the director has also made clear that “unlike Get Out, Us is not about race. It is instead about something that I feel has become an undeniable truth. And that is the simple fact that we are our own worst enemies.”
In Us, this theme will take quite literal form, as the Wilson family find themselves face to face with their own doppelgängers. How exactly things unfold from there remains to be seen, but it certainly looks like Peele’s making good on his previous claims while also delivering something that once again appears to push the boundaries of the genre. And we’ll get to find out for ourselves if Us can live up to some daunting expectations when the film hits theaters on March 15th.
