“Most people don’t won’t freedom, they want security.” Open Road Films has today unleashed the thrilling full trailer for Snowden, Oliver Stone’s starry biopic that recounts the remarkable life and journey of the titular, celebrated/shunned NSA operative.
Placing Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the coveted, multi-faceted role – sporting a deep, commanding accent to boot – today’s snippet introduces us to Edward Snowden’s brief period spent serving in the army, before a tragic injury brings his time on the front lines to an unceremonious end. Still hoping to serve his country in a different capacity, Gordon-Levitt’s mercurial lead then enlists for the CIA, fast becoming one of, if not the best in the business at navigating the complexity of the interwebs.
But there’s a dark secret lurking beneath America’s trusted government body – it has eyes and ears everywhere. Like unravelling an endless, digital puzzle, Snowden really ramps up its thriller tenets when our controversial title character stumbles upon the NSA’s PRISM program and other nefarious means of surveillance, subsequently taking said files beyond the CIA’s walled garden and showcasing them for all to see.
Also on board for the character-driven feature are The Divergent Series stalwart Shailene Woodley as Snowden’s girlfriend, along with Nicolas Cage, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson, Scott Eastwood, and Timothy Olyphant.
Twice delayed, Oliver Stone’s Oscar-tipped rendition of Edward Snowden‘s defining tale will finally make its bow in theaters on September 16.
