Hello, Cable
After his casting as Thanos, Brolin surprised everyone by taking the role of Cable (another Marvel character) in Deadpool 2. Fortunately, since both studios’ films wouldn’t clash (at the time), it was possible for him to do so without causing a bit of head-scratching from the viewers.
Speaking to Cinema Blend, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch explained the process.
“I think everybody in sort of the Marvel and Fox world considered it, and they take their time and make measured moves. But I think everyone thought it was prudent and was okay in terms of the way Thanos is portrayed and Cable is portrayed. They’re very different in styles, and in terms of the way they are presented in the movies, obviously. We couldn’t have cast a better Cable. We were filming last night and both of them were on set, and the chemistry is amazing. It’s such a fun movie to be on. I’m really grateful.”
In a separate interview, Brolin said he preferred portraying Thanos slightly more than he did Cable.
“Look, I really like doing Cable, and it’s practical. But I think if I was to have a preference, it’d be Thanos, just because my expectation was pretty low, given that I just thought I was a prop.”
That hasn’t stopped him from suggesting he’s set to play Nathan Summers for four movies, though. It’s this sort of commitment that the DCEU has been looking for from Affleck for years. Even when Brolin is promoting two different comic book films, he’s talking about both projects, positively and enthusiastically.
On the other hand, Affleck looks like he’d readily sell his kidney to never answer another question about Batman again. It’s sad to see how his passion for the universe and character have waned over the years, and we’re left to wonder what could’ve been had Brolin and Snyder agreed to terms over half a decade ago…
