Joss Whedon Hints At The Avengers 2 Villain

The internets are awash with Marvel rumors, speculation and innuendo. But the one that most of us who exist somewhat outside the Marvel fandom are kind of really excited about is the far far future The Avengers 2. Why? Because The Avengers was an awesome movie, period. And with Joss Whedon still at the helm, we can expect some more of the same from The Avengers 2.

The internets are awash with Marvel rumors, speculation and innuendo. But the one that most of us outside the Marvel fandom are kind of excited about is the far far future The Avengers 2. Why? Because The Avengers was an awesome movie, period. And with Joss Whedon still at the helm, we can expect some more of the same from The Avengers 2.

One of the many questions that needs answering about The Avengers 2 is who’s going to be the big baddie? Everyone seems to be predicting Thanos, who has a long Avengers history in the comic books and appeared at the very end of The Avengers. The character has also been teased as figuring into Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Joss Whedon is not about to talk, but he can hint. In an upcoming interview with Empire Magazine, Whedon vaguely teased at the possibilities of the next Avengers villain. Here’s what he had to say:

Yes, that always makes me cranky. I’m very excited about the villain, and have a lot to say about him. But if you watch my shows, the one thing I’ve never been very good at is guest stars, because I’ve always been interested in the ensemble. With The Avengers, I’m still most fascinated by them.

But Whedon won’t be trying to top the amusing Loki/Hulk battle at the end of The Avengers – which is good to know, given the tendency of many action directors to take something that was funny the first time and beat it to death like a giant green monster. Whedon’s greatest desire is to ‘make a better one’ than the last Avengers film. Can we get that in writing?

Whedon is also not particularly peeved about not directing the next Star Wars, although he admits to having a moment:

There was a moment of rue that I was already committed, I’m not going to lie, because who didn’t want to do that as a kid? But I think they got the right guy so just knowing that I’m going to enjoy the film when it comes out is great. I don’t even have to do any work.

Not being a big comic book person, I don’t really have a preference about the villain in The Avengers 2. My least favorite part of The Avengers was the appearance of aliens, which still seems kind of boring. But that appears to be the direction that The Avengers 2 will go, given the history of the comics. As long as Whedon thinks he can sell it, I don’t see any reason to doubt him.

The Avengers 2 has been slated for a May 2015 release. Until then we’ll have to settle for all the other Marvel action films due to come out between then and now.
