With festival season taking a hold of all things cinema at the moment, the slew of casting announcements is showing no signs of slowing down. Straight out of Toronto, Deadline reports that America’s sweetheart, Julia Roberts, is set to star in a remake of Oscar-winning Argentinian flick, The Secret In Their Eyes. The actress is on something of a winning streak lately, following on from her killer turn in last year’s August: Osage County and HBO’s The Normal Heart. Now, that trend looks set to continue with today’s news.
With Billy Ray (Captain Phillips) on board to direct, the movie has been passing through the development process at a steady pace. Plus, it already had a female lead – Gwyneth Paltrow. So, what does this mean for Gwynnie?
Even more interesting is that the report goes on to say they’re currently searching for a male lead. Again, Chiwetel Ejiofor was supposedly fulfilling that role. Neither of the two shunned actors are mentioned at all, so we’d hazard a guess and say the filmmakers “went in another direction.”
What’s known thus far is that the male lead will play an FBI Agent who cannot get over his daughter’s murder. Roberts will be on hand as his friend and former partner – which could be code for occasional bed buddy. Compared to the original, it sounds like there’s gonna be some liberties taken regarding the story, but that’s nothing out of the ordinary for an American remake.
The Secret In Their Eyes is set to commence shooting in October. Expect more casting announcements soon.
