The inaugural trailer for Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was nothing if not spectacular.
Initially unleashed earlier this month, the prehistoric promo revealed that Isla Nublar has actually been resting on a dormant volcano – one that’s long overdue an eruption. And that’s where Fallen Kingdom really kicks into gear.
Because despite rumors to the contrary, Universal’s teaser only included footage from the opening 57 minutes, which ought to allay fears that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had already blown its load. Still, that explosive opening – one considered to be the franchise’s biggest ever set piece – informs the tone and direction of Juan Antonio Bayona’s sequel, as the director told Empire Magazine:
Fallen Kingdom starts with a massive action piece that feels like a James Bond prologue, and in the centre there is the biggest set-piece ever done for a Jurassic movie.
A James Bond-styled prologue will certainly ensure that Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom captivates its audience from the off, while Empire’s exclusive image confirms that, yes, there will be dinosaurs. Big dinosaurs.
One quick Google search tells us that this particular dino closely resembles a Carnotaurus, though given Universal’s rebooted Jurassic franchise tends to experiment with its prehistoric DNA, we can’t be so sure. On a more general note, screenwriter Colin Trevorrow believes Fallen Kingdom won’t be like The Lost World – or any other movie in the franchise, for that matter:
At the end of this movie, it’s not a cliffhanger, but it’s designed for people to want to know what’s going to happen next, whereas the earlier Jurassic Park movies had pretty clear definitive endings. They were much more episodic. In working with Derek Connolly, my co-writer, we were also thinking about where it was gonna go in the future.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom stomps into uncharted territory on June 22nd, 2018.
