We’re now exactly one year away from the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and although at this point it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting that new trailer today like we expected, we do have a new tidbit from Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Grand Budapest Hotel), who will appear as an Atlantean character named Vulko.
We’ve known that Dafoe would make his debut in the film for a while now, but we weren’t sure if it’d be a significant role or just a way to establish Vulko for future DCEU projects. Now, during an interview with The Guardian, the Academy Award-winning actor seems to confirm that he’ll really only be making a cameo in Justice League, before moving on to much bigger things in James Wan’s solo Aquaman movie.
“Well, Justice League is very particular because it’s an ensemble movie and my character is being introduced here in order to be a principal role in Aquaman. These films are a different experience. They have different responsibilities, different resources and different intentions. It’s nice to go between those worlds if you can. They serve different impulses.”
In the comics, Vulko has been both friend and foe to Aquaman, so it’ll be interesting to see exactly how he’ll be introduced on the big screen. Will he begin as an ally to the team only to switch allegiances later on, perhaps? We’ll find out for sure when Justice League hits theaters on November 17th, 2017.
