Karen Gillan returns to the MCU later this year when she reprises her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but that’s not the last time we’ll see her. As she recently confirmed, Nebula will also factor into Avengers: Infinity War, and it’s not looking like a brief cameo. According to the Scottish actress, she’ll play a substantive part in Marvel’s upcoming gigantic team-up movie(s).
In a recent interview with THR (via ComicBookMovie.com) ahead of her untitled feature directorial debut, which began production earlier this week, Gillan discussed how Nebula factors into the highly-anticipated superhero sequel. Amongst other things, she’ll have serious “daddy issues.”
I’m so excited for people to see it! I just feel like it’s all of the best elements of the first one, just amplified. It’s even better – it’s funnier, the music’s even better … the second album is a blinder. It’s great. And in the first one, everyone was being established. Now that that’s out of the way, you really get to delve into all of their dilemmas and things like that. I think family would really be the main theme of the thing. And my character Nebula is dealing with a whole lot of stuff there – we see a whole new side to her. A much more human side actually, where we understand how truly awful and difficult her daddy issues are.
Beyond that, however, Gillan revealed Nebula’s connection to the new Avengers film, noting that she’ll make a “cheeky appearance” in the gargantuan, all-consuming movie event of 2018.
Yeah, she’s making a cheeky appearance there. I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say, but I’m pretty happy with how much she gets to do.
Of course, Gillan can’t reveal too much else at the moment. Likely for fear of death — both personally and professionally — under the ominous hand of Marvel. Though her comment doesn’t reveal much, it’s still encouraging to know her role won’t be limited to Guardians of the Galaxy. Of course, we’re just happy to see her regardless, whether it’s in an under the radar indie flick or a blockbuster like Avengers: Infinity War.
