In one of the weirdest marriages of director and franchise you’ve ever heard of, Quentin Tarantino is working on a Star Trek movie. Though separate from the currently-flailing Star Trek 4, all evidence points to the Pulp Fiction director’s project being set in the rebooted Kelvin timeline, complete with the current cast returning to reprise their roles.
We were previously promised this by Spock actor Zachary Quinto and now, during an appearance at Trekonderoga this past weekend, Karl Urban – who’s played Dr. “Bones” McCoy since 2009’s Star Trek – confirmed it. The Dredd and Thor: Ragnarok star says he’s “delighted” that the director wants to work with him and the rest of the cast and he’s fully on board with Tarantino’s vision.
“I was personally delighted he was not only a Star Trek fan, but also interested in working with our cast. It’s not only a new story, but he is just one of those filmmakers that has a very unique and specific vision. And he totally utilizes the camera to tell the story. I think he would make a great Star Trek movie, I really do.”
At the same event, Urban also spoke about why Tarantino’s seeking an R-rating for the project, which would be a first for the franchise. The actor explained that the director hopes to explore “the horror of space” to its fullest, including gory deaths in the vacuum of space and so on. He stated that he doesn’t believe Tarantino will tear up what Star Trek stands for, but instead give it his own spin.
Before fans get too excited for QT’s Trek, though, they should remember that fellow Kelvin timeline actor Simon Pegg has warned us that it may take 5 or 6 years for the movie to materialize due to the filmmaker’s busy schedule. Let’s just hope Tarantino finds some time to step into the world of Star Trek a lot sooner than that.
