Deadline reports that Kate Winslet is set to star in Jason Reitman’s coming-of-age pic Labor Day. Winslet will star opposite Josh Brolin in the drama that Reitman (Juno) penned and will direct.
Labor Day is a film adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s novel about a single mother (Winslet) of a young, awkward son who takes in a stranger over Labor Day weekend. Set in a small New Hampshire town, Winslet’s character offers a stranger a ride. When the stranger turns out to be an escaped convict, life lessons are learned.
Winslet is just coming off of shooting Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion. She’s another actress with great range, and brings something unique to each of her roles. While Labor Day sounds like a Nicholas Sparks-esque melodrama, I’m sure Winslet will bring her usual charm and depth to the role of single mother.
Reitman’s Right of Way is producing with Indian Paintbrush. Labor Day is set to start production next year.
