But When Will The Crossover Happen?
So, there you have it. A crossover is still on the table, it just doesn’t seem to be a priority for the studio. And honestly, we don’t blame them. They’ve got very detailed and extensive plans laid out for their cinematic universe that stretch back many, many years, while their small screen world is really just getting going. To have a crossover between the two at this point would probably feel a bit awkward and forced, despite how much people want to see it. Something like this would need to be built up to over quite a long period of time to have it come off as natural.
That being said, there’s no reason we can’t start to see some more hints and easter eggs to tease such a thing. A few big name drops or even a small cameo in an MCU film from a supporting character from one of their shows could go a long way in planting the necessary seeds and would surely please fans. Again, we have seen a few small references sprinkled in, and of course, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. even had some characters from the films show their face back in the day, but in recent years, the studio has really limited this type of stuff, and that’s a shame.
Even doing something like letting Coulson get back in on the big screen action for a bit would be very much appreciated. There are so many awesome characters on television that we’d love to see alongside the likes of the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man, etc. And we’re not only talking about heroes – everyone’s just waiting for Kingpin to take on Spidey, right? At this point, some sort of crossover simply needs to happen, and it’s nice to hear that it will – eventually.
Before we conclude, it’s important to highlight one other thing, which is slightly concerning. Feige mentions “repetition” at the end of his comment, which we assume means bringing a small screen hero into the films but with a new actor to portray him/her. Frankly, we’d rather not have a crossover at all than see that happen. Not only would it be insulting to the original actor, but it’d kind of defeat a lot of the purpose of doing this in the first place. People want to see Charlie Cox’s Daredevil fighting with the Avengers, not some brand new version of the hero with an actor who’s never played him before, right?
But I digress. The fact that Marvel isn’t ruling out a crossover between the movies and TV shows is great to hear and as more and more properties/characters are added to each medium, it should only make it even easier to start tying things together and building towards our favorite heroes and villains from screens both big and small crossing paths. Until then, however, we’ve definitely got a lot to look forward to.
Between Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Defenders, The Punisher and more, there’s never been a better time to be a fan of the House of Ideas, and with Mr. Feige steering the ship with the same confidence and vision that he has for all these years, we have full faith that Marvel knows what they’re doing. A crossover will happen, folks, and when it does, it’ll be at exactly the right time.
