Legendary excited audiences today at San Diego Comic-Con with their official announcement of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla sequel, but that wasn’t the only monstrous fan-favorite character up the studio’s sleeve. The panel concluded with the surprise announcement that a new King Kong film is in the works, titled Skull Island, and it already has a release date for November 4th, 2016.
The last time we saw the monstrous gorilla on the big screen was in Peter Jackson’s eponymous 2005 remake starring Jack Black, Naomi Watts, Adrien Brody, and motion capture legend Andy Serkis as Kong. He’s currently impressing audiences around the world with his portrayal of another primate, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ Caesar… could he return for Skull Island?
The new film was announced via teaser footage, which consisted of a race across a restless ocean, and through the foliage and rocks on a deserted island. The camera finally settled on the titular gorilla, who came out from the shadows and let out his ground-shaking roar. A voiceover followed, saying:
“Being alone in the wilderness, it had gone mad. It look at you with a vengeful aspect.”
There are no plot details, or word on who will direct the film, but it’s safe to say that it will explore the home of Kong, which houses other unusual creatures, many of whom were thought to be extinct.
Now the only question is… Will we see Kong fight Godzilla? Sure, the giant green lizard will have his hands busy in 2016 fighting off Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah, but with so many studios aiming to create shared cinematic universes, a crossover is certainly possible!
