Matthew Vaughn Writing Kingsman 2 Script

When you make a movie as rip-roaringly good as Kingsman: The Secret Service, there's understandably an immediate and deafening call for an encore - and director Matthew Vaughn's ears are still ringing from that commotion, he admits. Luckily, 20th Century Fox agrees with the fans whole-heartedly and has been pushing ahead with a follow-up, but it was unclear until today whether Vaughn would be involved. Now, talking with Yahoo! When you make a movie as rip-roaringly good as Kingsman: The Secret Service, there’s understandably an immediate and deafening call for an encore – and director Matthew Vaughn’s ears are still ringing from that commotion, he admits. Luckily, 20th Century Fox agrees with the fans whole-heartedly and has been pushing ahead with a follow-up, but it was unclear until today whether Vaughn would be involved. Now, talking with Yahoo! UK, the helmer has revealed that he’s personally at work on a script for Kingsman 2.

Vaughn had previously discussed the myriad directions in which a Kingsman follow-up could go, some taking the action stateside and some moving backward to incorporate Colin Firth’s fan favorite character Harry Hart. The helmer now says:

“The good news is I’m writing it next door at the moment, and if I think I can get the script good enough, then we’ll make it. Stay tuned, but we’re doing our damndest to make that happen.”

The director was not forthcoming with plot details on the Kingsman sequel, though he plans to have the movie in theaters by 2017. Vaughn, whose other projects have included Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, says he’s not in the business of making sequels – and to that end, he’s trying to make this one as distinctive and unpredictable as possible:

“I have to feel inspired and that I’m doing something different, and pushing my boundaries. In sequels normally you’re doing just more of the same. I’m trying to re-invent how to do a sequel at the moment – it’s tough. I’m in love with these characters and I want to work with them again, so I’ll probably be breaking the rule of tending not to make sequels. The bottom line is I have to feel excited and to think I’m making something new when I make a film.”

Firth was the breakout character of Kingsman, and though it would be hard to include him in future entries for reasons that anyone who saw the pic should find obvious, there’s definitely a desire from fans to see more of the kick-ass, debonair spy. It’s expected that star Taron Egerton will return as new Kingsman recruit Eggsy along with Sophie Cookson’s Kingsman agent Roxy and Mark Strong’s Merlin, but outside of that, the sky’s the limit for where the sequel can go. And with Vaughn involved, somewhere amazing is a safe bet.

Kingsman 2 does not have a release date yet, but Fox is putting it on the fast track.
