The signs of apocalypse are everywhere – Kim Kardashian released an entire book comprised of her selfies and people are buying it, the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year is Fifty Shades of Grey and now Hello Kitty, the inexplicably popular cat-without-a-mouth icon, is getting its own movie.
That’s right – Japanese lifestyle company Sanrio is financing and producing a feature based on the anthropomorphic feline with six symmetrical whiskers and has plans to launch a global release in 2019.
Including prints and advertising, the budget for said feature will clock in at between $160 and $240 million.
No word yet on the plot, but another terrifying possibility here is that the unsettling little pop culture phenom may not come to the big screen alone – Sanrio is mulling other character properties to appear in their own pics, including My Melody and Little Twin Stars. Fox Animation acquired rights to the company’s Mr. Men and Little Miss characters earlier this year, so they may also be in line for their own movie properties.
We’ll get you more on this bizarre news when we have it.
