Of all things, you’d never expect Doctor Who to be associated with the horror scene, but the show is actually a treasure trove of horrifying concepts and scary episodes. Some fans naturally put two and two together to realize that the long-running sci-fi series may have actually been their gateway into the horror genre.

The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3 both alluded to the politics of the time and opted to depict the undercurrents that influence the forces at work during the New Republic era. Now, Dave Filoni has confirmed that this shift is completely intentional because there’s a lot of storytelling potential in the conflict between New Republic forces and Imperial remnants. In fact, the execs may have been laying down these breadcrumbs as early as the first season of The Mandalorian, where X-Wing enforces policed the galaxy in its time of upheaval.

Trust the official Boys social media accounts to always come up with the perfect joke. With all the drama surrounding Elon Musk’s blue verification checkmark, it’s easy to lose sight of how utterly ridiculous this whole ordeal is, but the crew of Amazon’s hit parody series can never fail to point out the irony in a situation. Their latest joke involving the “lamestream media” even has an in-universe justification involving Black Noir, serving as the cherry on top of an already brilliant cake.

When you think about it, Doctor Who has featured dozens of extremely terrifying episodes in its 60-year history. A lot of Whovians are now recognizing that their fascination with the horror genre might trace its roots back to those early days of hiding behind the couch whenever a weird monster showed up to cause TARDIS residents terror. Even in modern Who, we have a lot of scary monsters like the Weeping Angels or the Silence, so that might just be a lingering element of the beloved series.

More so than the obvious implication, I think this proves how versatile Doctor Who can be. This is a show where the story might jump from a historical drama to a space epic to a horror show in a matter of episodes, and most fans wouldn’t even bat an eye. And perhaps that’s how they’ve managed to keep it going for 60 years.

Anyhow, that’s all we have for you today, but make sure to tune back in tomorrow for another roundup of developments from around the sci-fi world.
