Michael Bay isn’t a director one would typically associate with old-school practical effects. All across his blockbuster portfolio – Transformers in particular – the filmmaker has displayed a knack for engineering popcorn movies that have an inherent ability to wow the moviegoing masses, regardless of whether the story is up to snuff.
That being said, cast your mind back to the breathless skydiving sequence in Dark Of The Moon and you’ll know that Bay can often mix practical shots with CGI for added realism, which is something he’ll look to continue with the release of Transformers: The Last Knight.
[zergpaid]While we await the first teaser with bated breath, the first official behind-the-scenes video for The Last Knight debuted late last night via the film’s ever-active Facebook page, and here we see Laura Haddock and Mark Wahlberg strapped in to a giant, dynamic rig. Sure, the entire backdrop is enveloped with green screens, but this Inception-esque ‘Room Roll’ is fairly impressive, as Haddock and Wahlberg slide down to grapple on to what looks to be a stand-in for a giant blade. Decepticon or Autobot? That’s the real question.
On YouTube, the set video was accompanied with a very brief synopsis for The Last Knight, which essentially confirms what we already knew; Optimus Prime journeys back to Earth in search of a missing artefact, one that holds ties to King Arthur. It reads as so: “Optimus Prime finding his home planet, Cybertron, now a dead planet, which he comes to find he was responsible for killing. He finds a way to bring the planet back to life, but in order to do so he needs to find an artifact, and that artifact is on Earth.”
Transformers: The Last Knight will open on June 23, 2017. John Turturro and John Goodman are on board to reprise their roles as Agent Seymour Simmons and Hound, respectively.
