Imaginative, beautiful, and bold, The LEGO Movie was one of the biggest cinematic surprises of the last several years, taking a concept that could have easily turned out to be nothing more than a shameless cash grab and turning it into a heartfelt, enjoyable and charming outing that’s now spawned a whole franchise. With The LEGO Batman Movie having recently released to excellent reviews, and The LEGO Ninjango Movie coming down the pipeline, it doesn’t look like those colorful building blocks will be going anywhere any time soon, and that’s perfectly alright with us.
Aside from all the spinoffs in the works, there’s also the next entry in the main series to look forward to, as The LEGO Movie 2 is set to be with us on February 8th, 2019. That’s a long ways away, but ideas are already being tossed around for the sequel and according to Chris McKay, who worked as animation supervisor on the first film, we should expect it to be a “big musical,” with some “space action” tossed in for good measure.
Speaking on Shanlian On Batman podcast (via Heroic Hollywood), here’s what he had to share:
LEGO 2 is going to be this big musical and space action movie. They need a lot of the writing, a lot of development, not only with script development, but development with songwriters. So it was very ambitious to get that movie out.
Of course, this particular franchise is no stranger to music, after The LEGO Movie found itself with an Oscar-nominated song in “Everything is Awesome,” not to mention the musical numbers in The LEGO Batman Movie. So, to hear that they’ll be embracing that aspect again is definitely welcome.
As for the space action, well, we’re not really sure what to expect there, but after seeing how imaginative the first film was, we’re excited to see what else they have planned and feel pretty confident that no matter where The LEGO Movie 2 takes us, be it outer space or somewhere a bit closer to home, it’s going to deliver another very enjoyable, laugh out loud adventure.
