Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu’s follow-up to Birdman promises a raw, visually-ambitious take on 19th century American frontier life. Based on the teaser trailer and promo images, early responses to The Revenant have already begun to stir up Oscar talk for all parties involved, and in light of this new full-length trailer, a long-awaited statuette may find its way into the hands of leading man Leonardo DiCaprio next February.
This true life tale of adventure and survival revolves around the experiences of explorer Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), a legendary pioneer whose hunting team strays into new, uncharted territory during one of their stints. After Glass is attacked by a predator, his crew assume he has perished and venture on without him. Holding one of his closest friends and co-workers John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) responsible for his situation, Glass vows to trek on and bring him to justice.
The harrowing journey plotted by Glass is echoed somewhat by the film’s own turbulent production. Earlier on in the year trouble struck the shoot, pushing back filming on the movie’s climactic ending. But what’s a little strife if the end result looks capable of snagging critical acclaim and a series of awards nods? In particular for the work of cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, whose naturalistic style lends an added touch of authenticity and woe to Glass’s story.
Opening in the US this Christmas, The Revenant hits select theaters on December 25 followed by a nationwide release on January 8. Will Poulter and Domhnall Gleeson co-star.
