Linda Cardellini has joined the upcoming action thriller Hunter Killer and, at the present time, appears to be the only woman in the cast. The film is a submarine movie based on the novel Firing Point by George Wallace and Don Keith, and is to be the first big budget, high profile project of director Donovan Marsh (Avenged). The high profile comes from the casting of leading actors Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman.
Gerard Butler will play an American submarine commander, who is sent into Russian waters to rescue the Russian President (Gary Oldman), who’s caught in the midst of an armed coup. Also in the cast are Toby Stephens, Billy Bob Thornton, Common, Ryan McPartlin, and Gabriel Chavarria. Linda Cardellini will play Jane Norquist – a senior NSA analyst and Russia expert. So, in other words, she gets to sit in an office talking to a speaker phone, while the boys run around with guns.
The script is written by Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2) and Jamie Moss (Street Kings) – and it is the presence of Craig in particular that gives this project a boost, since he has successfully adapted literature before. Beyond that, this would seem to be another mediocre action film in the making. Anything else would be a pleasant surprise.
