Lionsgate is reportedly pushing ahead with a reboot of cult 90s horror film Cube, though it appears there may be a twist in the tale in what the studio is describing as a “re-imagining.”

Vincenzo Natali’s 1997 original was a low-key, psychological film that followed seven strangers imprisoned within the titular structure. It was a simple, yet brilliant concept, raising questions of morality as the inhabitants decided whether to help one another, or pursue their own best interests and escape the Cube at the cost of the others. Natali’s horror spawned both a sequel and a prequel in the early 2000s, though Lionsgate is preparing to flip the concept on its head for this modern retelling under the new moniker, Cubed.

Per The Hollywood Reporter:

Using the original setup of seven strangers trapped in a giant cube-like structure, Cubed is described as a sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence, humanity and the birth of a new “digital” race.

Expanding upon the premise of the original, the studio is hoping to extrapolate the core themes of Natali’s somewhat under-appreciated hit and broadcast them across a bigger canvas. With Phil Gawthorne handling the reboot’s script and Saman Kesh attached to direct, there’s certainly a lot of promise here, as questions of artificial intelligence are just as pressing – if not more so – today as they were back at the turn of the millennium.

Lionsgate’s reboot of Cube – or Cubed, as it now seemingly known – is still very much in its nascent stages. Nevertheless, you can share your early impressions of the studio’s plan to bring back the cult horror hit down below.
