Though the following information was posted along with EW’s huge batch of new images from Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which can be seen below), when coupled together with a healthy dose of speculation, it might turn out to be a pretty big plot spoiler, so read on at your own risk.

Luke Skywalker’s absence from any and all promotion for The Force Awakens has led fans to believe he’s being hidden away for a very specific reason, and though many of the theories are way out there (he’s not Kylo Ren folks.. seriously), the character following in his father’s footsteps and turning to the dark side may not be too far from the mark – according to the First Order, at least.

It turns out the new breed of Stormtroopers are basically born into servitude to the First Order, and from an early age they’re filled full of propaganda about how the Rebels and the Jedi were actually the bad guys. Because of this, Finn – a former Stormtrooper – believes that Luke Skywalker was “a villain who destroyed the benevolent Empire,” and may not be seeking him out to return his lightsaber to him, but rather put an end to him, with it.

That’s just one theory of course, but at the very least it does make sense that Luke would go into a self-imposed exile if half the galaxy believe he and his kind were evil war criminals.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, and all will be revealed at that time. Until then, check out those aforementioned photos below.
