Aside from those projects already in active development (see: Aquaman, Shazam!), the DC Extended Universe is said to be in a holding pattern until The Batman moves forward.
Just yesterday, it was reported that writer-director Matt Reeves was still hard at work on his screenplay for the Caped Crusader’s next solo adventure, and that the likes of Batgirl and Chris McKay’s Nightwing movie have been placed on ice until such a time as Reeves is ready to shift The Batman into production.
That makes a lot of sense, too, as the Powers That Be likely want to cement Bruce Wayne’s place in the DCEU – regardless of who winds up playing the Dark Knight – before Warner’s shared universe can take the next step. And speaking of franchise developments, industry sleuth Mario-Francisco Robles brings word today that Matthew Vaughn of Kingsman: The Golden Circle is still in the running for Man of Steel 2.
This scoop comes just two weeks after we brought you the news – or, rather, rumor – that Mission: Impossible‘s Henry Cavill was keen to extend his current DCEU contract, which would presumably secure his place for the as-yet-untitled Man of Steel sequel.
And after the hullabaloo surrounding Justice League – Warner Bros.’ decision to omit Superman from most, if not all of the film’s marketing proved costly – fans are longing for the moment when the Last Son of Krypton takes flight once again.
So let’s assume Matthew Vaughn accepts the gig, potentially hiring Mark Millar in the process, when can we expect Man of Steel 2 to hit theaters? Word is Warner Bros. has reserved two dates in 2020 (February 14th, June 5th), which are likely being held for Cyborg and Green Lantern Corps. Perhaps Superman’s next solo adventure will slot into 2021, then? More on this story as it develops.
