The Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie is one of the most highly anticipated films of 2023, but the lead star isn’t sweating it.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Robbie spilled on the plastic icon’s first live-action movie. She knows how much attention the movie has gotten and experienced some of that firsthand when she and co-star Ryan Gosling, who portrays Ken, were seen shooting in Venice Beach, wearing neon spandex while rollerblading, and the internet absolutely exploded. Months later, Robbie says she’s prepared to win people over with this surprising story.
“People have got strong feelings. I’d much rather that than indifference. Now, let me subvert your expectations. It’s much scarier, but it’s also a great place to begin.”
Not much is known about the plot, but this hasn’t stopped people from speculating and fawning over the possibilities. The film’s being co-written by Greta Gerwig (Little Women) and her partner Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story) and directed by Gerwig. She began her career as an indie darling and the Barbie movie will reportedly not be what people might assume it is.
Taking a different approach to the movie was what drew Robbie to the project. Originally, the movie was helmed by Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer before Robbie got hold of it. She will now star and produce Barbie and we should definitely expect the unexpected.
“Making an obvious Barbie movie would’ve been extremely easy to do, and anything easy to do is probably not worth doing.”
Robbie can basically call her own shots in the industry and she’s been known to take risks that pay off. She plays the fantabulous Harley Quinn across multiple DC movies and her production company LuckyChap Entertainment produced the revenge thriller Promising Young Woman, which won Best Original Screenplay at the 2021 Oscars.
The Barbie cast is absolutely stacked with names that include America Ferrera, Kate Mckinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Alexandra Shipp, and more. Liu said that working alongside Robbie and Gosling gave him imposter syndrome, and it’s hard to blame him for that.
The Barbie movie comes to theaters on July 21, 2023.
