We’re officially less than a month out from Barbie‘s rousing debut in cinemas, and the Margot Robbie-led fantasy comedy has quite the hefty claim as the most anticipated summer blockbuster of the year; its box-office bout with Oppenheimer may be a fun narrative, but the goals of the two films are worlds apart, and we reckon that whatever Barbie‘s cooking up will have heartfelt resonance as its key ingredient, making it a winner in just about anyone’s book.
Indeed, with Greta Gerwig at the helm, it’s safe to expect a movie with nary a single detail left to chance, even the details as simple as her star’s foot. In a recent interview with TIME, Robbie revealed just how much effort went into getting the film’s opening shot, in which we only see Barbie’s foot. Apparently, that scene alone took eight different tries to get exactly right, and Robbie was adamant that the foot in question truly did belong to her.
“I really don’t like it when someone else does my hands or feet in an insert shot.”
If the foot shot took eight tries, then we can only imagine how much effort went into some of the film’s larger set pieces, like that groovy dance number at Barbie’s mansion or the chaotic beach scene. Whatever the case behind the scenes may be, we figure that Barbie will end up being a very, very apparent labor of love — emphasis on both “labor” and “love” — and we’re primed and ready to gobble up whatever Robbie and company fire our way.
Barbie will spring into cinemas on July 21.
