While the plans to establish Harley Quinn as one of the DCEU’s major players didn’t go according to plan when Birds of Prey bombed at the box office, Margot Robbie is hoping to stick around as the Joker’s former flame for a long time to come, with the two-time Academy Award nominee taking top billing in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
The writer and director may have teased that very few members of the ensemble are going to be making it out of the movie alive, but given the popularity and marketability of the former Harleen Quinzell, Robbie would surely be one of the guaranteed candidates to survive until the credits. In fact, the entire story looks like it’s set into motion by her capture and subsequent escape, so she’ll be getting her hands dirty on more than one occasion.
In a new interview, Robbie was asked if The Suicide Squad would see Harley continue to wield her signature baseball bat with deadly accuracy and precision, and while that’s not the case this time around, there’s going to be plenty of other implements of destruction on display.
“My baseball bat is next to my bed back in LA. I’ve got other weapons in this one. Many, many weapons, mainly one actually.”
Birds of Prey sequels may be a far-fetched proposition, but should The Suicide Squad perform as well as everyone’s expecting it to, then it could realistically be refitted into a Harley Quinn-driven franchise, positioning her as the one character constantly capable of cheating death and living to tell the tales from whatever insane mission Task Force X end up being sent on. We’ll just have to wait and see how things pan out, though, but Harley appears to be just as dangerous as ever, especially now she’s flying solo without the Clown Prince of Crime.
