Back before the reviews for Suicide Squad made their way online, it was reported that Warner Bros. was planning a solo Harley Quinn movie, which would see Margot Robbie reprise the role of The Joker’s maniacal main squeeze. After the critical backlash and initial box office drop, however, many figured the studio might rethink any spinoff plans they had in place – but, it seems the Harley flick is still very much alive.
We had previously heard that Robbie would be the “creative driving force” behind the film, and THR reports that the 26-year-old Aussie actress will also executive produce through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner. Apparently, WB had Robbie sign a first-look deal, as they see her acclaimed turn in Suicide Squad as one of the main reasons the David Ayer-helmed picture was able to generate over $700 million at the global box office, and are keen for their relationship to continue.
There aren’t really any new details about the movie itself in the report – though the trade does confirm that “other DC heroines” will feature. That could well mean the likes of Poison Ivy, Batgirl, and Harley’s Task Force X teammate Katana, but there are countless other possibilities. The initial report also indicated that an unnamed female writer was being courted to pen the script, but there’s no mention of that here.
Suicide Squad is still showing in theaters, but official Blu-ray/DVD release details should be with us very soon, so keep an eye out.
