Aside from maybe the odd Force ghost cameo, Mark Hamill looks to be more or less done with the Star Wars movies, so now might be the opportune time for the actor to find work in another much loved, interplanetary blockbuster series. Indeed, Hamill’s involvement in the planned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has seemed like an exciting possibility ever since he and director James Gunn had a cordial Twitter exchange back in February about the idea.
But while many took it as a promising sign when the two of them finally met up for a chat last month, Hamill’s recent comments to Collider suggest that this wasn’t exactly the productive business meeting that fans had in mind. Speaking to the outlet, here’s what he shared:
“Well, actually, earlier when I had him down for a barbecue we didn’t talk about the movie. We talked about living in Malibu, our relatives, pets, and it never really came up. But that’s the way it should be, I don’t want to strong arm him in any way. I love the movies, they’re fun, but I’m happy to be in the audience. There’s a lot less pressure.”
That’s old Mark Hamill for you. Just when you expect him to join in on the action, he’ll take that metaphorical lightsaber and toss it over his shoulder. Nonetheless, the actor’s statements leave open the possibility that the pair may eventually get round to discussing the subject of Guardians – perhaps after ‘pets’ has run its course as a conversation topic. We certainly won’t rule out one day seeing Luke Skywalker exploring a whole other galaxy with Star-Lord and the gang; it just might be a slightly longer wait before we get some confirmation either way.
There’s still plenty of time for the details to get worked out though, since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t be released until 2020. Before then, we have a whole load of Marvel to get through, including Ant Man and the Wasp, which arrives in theaters on July 6th.
