Solo: A Star Wars Story hasn’t enjoyed the best reception from fans in the run-up to its arrival. From the mixed reactions to its announcement to the suspicion that followed the behind the scenes upheaval that saw original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller booted out and replaced with Ron Howard, it seemed for a while there that luck just wasn’t on Solo‘s side and it was destined to fail. As Han himself once said, though, never tell him the odds.
Well, as it turns out, Lucasfilm and Disney knew what they were doing, as the first reviews of the prequel have been very positive. And, if that wasn’t enough to convince fans that the film has turned out fine, a source that Star Wars lovers have come to trust implicitly over the years has now praised Solo – Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.
The series stalwart took to Twitter this week to make clear how much he enjoyed the movie, saying:
“NO SPOILERS until everyone’s seen it,” Hamill wrote,” but I can’t wait to see it AGAIN. #SoHighFromSolo.”
Of course, you’d expect a member of the Star Wars family to tow the company line and praise whatever Lucasfilm churned out, but Hamill has built himself a reputation for being refreshingly honest and letting fans know what he really thinks. Infamously, he admitted he wasn’t keen on Luke’s journey in The Last Jedi initially, though he eventually came around to writer/director Rian Johnson’s radical revisionist take on his character.
Hamill also opened up about his feelings on Solo prior to its release. Though he said he was excited to see it, he worried if Lucasfilm was putting out too many Star Wars movies – for instance, Ron Howard’s Anthology pic’s releasing less than half a year after The Last Jedi.
However, it seems any possible concerns the actor may have had have disappeared in the face of his enjoyment of the film. That certainly bodes well for the rest of us, and we’ll soon get to see what all the fuss is about for ourselves as Solo: A Star Wars Story blasts into cinemas on May 25th.
