Mark Romanek, director of Never Let Me Go, is wanted to direct Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Cinderella, written by Aline Brosh McKenna, (The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses). The film will most likely follow the cliché Cinderella plot, where she meets a prince, loses her slipper and all that jazz.
I really enjoyed Romanek’s adaptation of Never Let Me Go, even though it made almost no money at the box office and dropped off the awards-radar very quickly, proving that no one agreed with me. Somehow, I can actually see him doing well with this project.
On the other hand, this Cinderella movie looks basically like garbage. The similar Tim Burton live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was nothing short of abysmal. Plus, Aline Brosh McKenna has a questionable record (the only thing clever about 27 Dresses is its title), and Cinderella is kind of the lamest fairy tale ever passed down through the oral tradition.
While Romanek’s involvement with Cinderella has brought my hopes up slightly, I still think this project should be thrown in the can. What do you think?
