Hawkeye’s new hairdo in the latest Avengers: Endgame trailer has been the butt of so many jokes in the past week that apparently even Mark Ruffalo couldn’t help throwing him a jab.
To mark the 15th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Hulk actor took to Facebook with an image of himself in the beloved 2004 sci-fi alongside Jeremy Renner in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War sequel, both of whom are seen sporting stylish mohawks. But rather than blasting Renner for stealing his look, Ruffalo instead commended his co-star for his good taste, writing:
“It’s been 15 years since the release of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and 0 years since Jeremy Renner stole my look. But I don’t blame him. It’s a good look.”
In Eternal Sunshine, Ruffalo assumes a supporting role as technician Stan Fink. While trying out for the part, it’s said that the actor impressed director Michel Gondry when he suggested that Stan could model his look after Joe Strummer from The Clash. In the case of Hawkeye, however, it’s widely predicted that the change in hairstyle was inspired less by a love of ‘70s punk rock and more by the death of his family. Hey, we all deal with grief in our own way.
While Clint Barton has got the internet talking with his bold new look, Bruce Banner has proved a lot more camera shy in the Endgame trailers, both of which give very little screen time to Ruffalo. Hulk, meanwhile, has been completely absent from the film’s promotional footage, which has led to much speculation about what exactly Marvel is trying to hide.
Perhaps the lack of Hulk is just supposed to keep us in suspense until his triumphant return, or maybe the Professor Hulk predictions have it right. Either way, you can expect to see Bruce’s big green alter ego in action when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th.
