Icon Films has launched the first trailer for family drama, Infinitely Polar Bear. Directed by Maya Forbes, the movie centers on a depressive father figure who struggles to overcome his disease for the sake of his family. Its madcap title aside, the film battles with a heavy subject matter that’s carefully presented in this initial preview.
Starring Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana as husband and wife, their troubles commence when she heads off to business school leaving him in charge of their family homestead; in particular, their ‘spirited’ daughters. The decision to unite these two Marvel alums appears to have been a wise move, as each has been awarded a great deal of critical praise for their performances since the movie debuted over a year ago at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Since then, it bagged distribution from Sony Pictures Classics, who will release the movie later this year.
Check out the trailer above, and the brand new Australian poster – hence the different release date – below. Infinitely Polar Bear opens in the U.S. on June 19th.
Fresh from his much lauded performances in Foxcatcher and The Normal Heart, Mark Ruffalo plays Cam, a manic-depressive mess of a father who, when his wife (Zoe Saldana) goes away to business school, attempts to take full responsibility of their two young and spirited daughters. Following a breakdown that left him unemployable and despite his track record of not fulfilling expectations, Cam is determined to overcome his disease and prove to his family that he can be the man they need him to be. Based on the childhood of writer/director Maya Forbes, this funny, moving depiction of mental illness was one of the standout films of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and again at the Toronto Film Festival in 2014.
