Hot off starring in Marvel’s smash hit blockbuster Black Panther – which continues to destroy the box office – Martin Freeman is now swapping the fictional land of Wakanda for the barren but beautiful landscape of rural Australia in upcoming zombie thriller Cargo. And though the scenery is nice, there’s an (un)deadly danger out there in the outback, as teased by this brand new clip.
The footage shown here promises a taut, emotional ride, as Freeman plays a man – named Andy – who’s trying to protect his baby daughter from a zombie outbreak. The worst part is that he himself is infected, after his partner bit him before she died. Now, he only has 48 hours to get her to a safe place before he succumbs to the virus.
As for this clip in particular, the context is a bit unclear, but it would seem that Andy’s found himself in a rather sticky situation, as a zombie attacks him while he gets into his car. It looks like it takes place near the start, too, as his wife (or at least, we assume that’s his wife), is still alive and well.
For more, here’s the official plot synopsis:
“Andy’s stranded… in the aftermath of a violent pandemic and, infected himself, desperately seeks a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from his own changing nature. Salvation may lie with an isolated Aboriginal tribe, but to gain access he must first earn the allegiance of a young Indigenous girl on a tragic quest of her own.”
Cargo also stars Anthony Hayes, Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, Kris McQuade, Simone Landers and David Gulpilil. It’s produced by Kristina Ceyton, who was also behind 2014’s critically acclaimed The Babadook. Whether this effort will reach that one’s level of success is hard to say, but it certainly looks interesting and we’ll be able to judge for ourselves when it infects Netflix on May 18th.
