As a member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association I could not be more proud to announce that Martin Scorsese will be honored as part of the 17th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards on VH1 on Thursday, January 12th.
The director of Mean Streets, Goodfellas and Hugo will be presented with the Music + Film Award. The Music + Film Award, presented to Quentin Tarentino at the 16th Annual Awards, is given to filmmakers who have touched audiences through cinematic storytelling and has heightened the impact of films through the brilliant of source and original music.
Who can forget Scorsese’s use of the Rolling Stones “Jumping Jack Flash” in Mean Streets, “Janie Jones” by The Clash in Bringing out the Dead or The Crystals’ “Then He Kissed Me” in Goodfellas. Martin Scorsese has changed the way music and film work together to tell a story.
BFCA President Joey Berlin announced the choice of Martin Scorsese for this honor and said:
“This year’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards marks another gratifying collaboration with the Broadcast Film Critics Association and our partners at VH1,” states Joey Berlin, BFCA President. “With a very impressive lineup of films featuring the world’s biggest stars under consideration this year, we look forward to a truly spectacular show highlighted by the presentation of the Music+Film Award to Martin Scorsese, one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.”
In a bit of kismet, Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is a likely contender at this year’s Critics Choice Movie Awards. An informal poll of my fellow BFCA members on Twitter found strong support for the 3D family film about a little boy living in a train station and his encounter with a forgotten film legend.
Voting for this year’s Critics Choice Movie Awards, among the 250 voting film critics from across the country closes this weekend with an announcement of nominees shortly after that. The 17th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards will air on VH1 January 12, 2012 at 8 Pm ET, 7 Pm CT.
