What an absolute fiasco Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has been. It was bad enough when the third outing of the pint-sized Avenger was deemed the worst possible foot forward for Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe by fans, but with star Jonathan Majors coming under unprecedented scrutiny shortly after thanks to his assault charges, the future of Kang and Quantumania has been just as muddy as its present as of late.
And the curious case of Quantumania‘s unrealized debut on streaming hasn’t helped either; the film’s first wave of home media releases was earlier this month on April 18, but it didn’t include the expected release on Disney Plus, likely due to Disney being apprehensive about any association with Majors at the moment, and therefore not wanting to plaster his face all over their streaming platform.
But now, after that unexpected and poorly communicated delay, Quantumania is finally in the pipeline for a Disney Plus release, with the official Marvel Twitter account revealing the date as May 17.
For those who either enjoyed or missed out on Quantumania in theaters, any step forward is a positive one, but for others, it looks like it’s too little too late.
It’s definitely a curious move by Disney, but considering Jonathan Majors’ court date will be taking place on May 8, it’s no stretch to imagine that the relatively far-off release date is a strategic move from the company to give it ample time to come up with a PR solution should the outcome of that appearance, and subsequently his contract/relationship with Marvel, not go in Majors’ favor.
Of course, given Majors’ enormous presence in Quantumania, it’s hard to say what such a solution would even look like beyond pulling the film entirely, which would realistically just cause more problems for the fans.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will release to Disney Plus on May 17.
