Is the hype train about to derail?

Although some unsavory corners of the internet are attempting to pit Ezra Miller and Jonathan Majors against each other in some kind of twisted battle to determine which one is worse, the winner at the box office is going to be the latter’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania by a wide margin.

It’s a touch ironic that DC Studios co-CEO and former long-tenured Marvel Cinematic Universe servant James Gunn has regularly touted the Scarlet Speedster’s incoming solo debut as one of the greatest comic book adaptations of all-time, only for it to end up falling drastically short of a movie widely regarded by critics and fans alike as perhaps the single worst feature Kevin Feige’s outfit has ever sent into the world.

The latest projections have The Flash opening north of $70 million domestically on its way to a global haul in the $155-165 million range, which could be described as solid-if-unspectacular. Quantumania, meanwhile, netted $120 million on home soil and $249 million in total, proving once again that the battle to be named the best superhero saga in the business is one-sided even when the competitors are experiencing vastly different fortunes.

Of course, should The Flash show legs then it may well be in with a shot at eclipsing Quantumania‘s lackluster $476 million, which everyone at DC will be hoping it does after Shazam! Fury of the Gods sank without a trace after going down in a ball of flames. If it doesn’t, then Gunn’s reset just became even more important than it was already deigned to be.
