Due to Disney’s current mood for embracing the past, the House of Mouse will soon give us a (very) belated sequel to the 1964 beloved classic Mary Poppins. Titled Mary Poppins Returns, it’ll feature Emily Blunt taking over from Julie Andrews as the practically perfect magical nanny. In place of her cockney chimney sweep pal Bert (Dick Van Dyke) is Jack, a street lamp-lighter played by Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
It’s got all the makings of another hit for Disney and now, the studio’s released the first teaser trailer for the sequel, finally giving us an idea of just what we’re in store for this Christmas. From the looks of it, Returns will be another enjoyable slice of Mouse House fare, with Emily Blunt appearing to be a perfect fit for the titular role, even from only the brief glimpse we see of her here.
Unfortunately, there’s not much else on display in this short promo – as it really is just a teaser – but so far, we’re feeling optimistic about the film and are certainly excited to see more. Even if it can’t quite reach the same heights as its predecessor did, we’re still looking forward to catching back up with Mary and the rest of the gang.
For those who may not know, Mary Poppins Returns is set some 25 years after the original and focuses on the Banks children now that they’re all grown up – with Michael having a family of his own. That family is thrust into crisis, however, and so Mary Poppins is back on the case. The important thing here, though, is that this new premise more closely reflects the inspiration behind the Poppins character – as created by P.L. Travers – which was depicted in the 2013 movie, Saving Mr. Banks.
Oh, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Mary Poppins Returns will whisk moviegoers off on a heartfelt journey to Depression-era London when Disney’s long-in-development sequel descends from the heavens on December 25th, 2018.
