Today we have our first look at Matt Damon in the upcoming science-fiction film Elysium, a film that many are excited for as it is Neill Blomkamp‘s follow-up to his ultra successful 2009 film District 9.
Not long ago, we also got the official synopsis for the film, which reads:
In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy “Coordinators,” people who can afford bio-genetical engineering, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, built by the Armadyne Corporation, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes, a hard government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky ex-con Max is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Sounds like it could be an interesting film. Damon, who is playing Max, certainly looks like he’s ready to blast whatever stands in his way.
As for District 9, it was a decent film, but not particularly great. Under the Academy’s rules for that year, it even managed to squeeze out a Best Picture nomination. If nothing else, it showed that Blomkamp is able to handle putting together a good science-fiction film for $30 million, so it will be interesting to see what he is able to accomplish with a much bigger budget of $100 million.
The film, which also stars Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, and Sharlto Copley, hits theaters on March 1, 2013.
