Ridley Scott’s unstoppable streak of cranking out a movie a year continues with his upcoming sci-fi adventure The Martian. By the sounds of things, certain parts of production are wrapped (Jessica Chastain finished shooting her parts weeks ago) and others are still in full swing on what appears to be a full-scale replica of Mars. Just kidding.
The Martian is based on the novel by Andy Weir, who took a snap of the movie’s leading man during a recent set visit. In the flick, Matt Damon stars as Mark Watney, an astronaut stranded on Mars after his crew thinks him dead following a harsh sandstorm. They depart, leaving Watney alone on the red planet with only his frantically-whirring mind to keep him company and to save his life.
In this first pic (posted to Weir’s Facebook via Collider), Damon appears (in his Watney garb!) alongside his assistant Colin. If you look behind the pair, you should be able to spot the Rover which features prominently in Watney’s tale as he treks to various parts of the planet during his mission to stay alive.
Check out the gallery below to see if you can spot any other giveaways in the snap or in any of the other three images found on Weir’s Facebook page featuring Chastain and co-star Aksel Hennie.
Adapted from Weir’s novel by Drew Goddard, The Martian is due to arrive in theaters on November 25, 2015. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and Michael Pena co-star.
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.
Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.
After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.
Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?
