Though it’s been a while now since we last saw Doctor Who co-stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan share the screen, the pair still operate in the same, Marvel-related circles. And as production gets underway for Sony’s Morbius, Smith recalls how the Guardians of the Galaxy star was the one who talked him into giving the superhero genre a try.
Speaking to LA Times, Smith was reluctant to give too many details away, but he did have high praise for the Nebula actress, and it seems that he trusted Gillan’s judgment enough to follow her in joining a comic book universe.
“Karen’s amazing,” Smith said. “She’s going to end up ruling the world. I can’t tell you her exact advice to me – I’d have to kill you. But she told me that she really likes it, making those movies. That was enough for me. And that’s been my experience so far.”
As it turns out, things are apparently going pretty well for Smith on the set of Morbius, and it sounds like Safe House helmsman Daniel Espinosa is one of the main reasons why.
“I really like the director, Daniel Espinosa, on [Morbius]. I’ve kind of waited [comic book movies] out a bit. I nearly did one last year and then I didn’t. This one felt right because of him.”
A few days ago, THR reported that Smith will be starring opposite Jared Leto in the role of Loxias Crown, the best friend of Morbius who suffers from the same blood disease. But speaking of major franchise roles, the actor has also insisted in the last week that he’s “definitely” not in Star Wars: Episode IX, despite previous reports saying otherwise, though given how spoiler-conscious Lucasfilm has been lately, perhaps fans can still hold out hope that he’s just good at keeping secrets.
Regardless, it’s not long now before we see Gillan back in her own comic book role, with Avengers: Endgame set to hit theaters on April 26th. After that, Morbius will be serving as the second installment of Sony’s own Marvel universe when it comes out on July 31st, 2020.
