This particular rumor should be taken with a massive grain of salt, but that doesn’t change how exciting it is. Just days after Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey noted that he’s circled roles in comic book films before and would be open to starring in Marvel and DC adaptations, we’re hearing that he may currently be in Sony’s crosshairs for the upcoming Spider-Man reboot.
The news comes from a YouTube channel called That Hashtag Show. Now, while they aren’t exactly the most credible source and don’t have a history for big scoops like this, they did correctly report several big Avengers: Age of Ultron spoilers back in April, so there could be some truth here.
The role in question is that of Peter Parker’s longtime nemesis, Norman Osborn, who of course goes from being your traditional run-of-the-mill corrupt business magnate to glider-flying supervillain, the Green Goblin. This would be the third time we’ve seen the character on screen; Willem Dafoe played him in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, while Chris Cooper had a brief role in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
[zerg]Now that the wall crawler’s franchise is going through yet another reboot, of course Sony would find another actor to fill the role. But, will audiences even want to see Osborn on screen again, what with the slew of other great Spider-Man villains waiting to be brought to life? With someone of McConaughey’s caliber in the role, maybe so. As I said before, this is merely a rumor for now, but an enticing one nonetheless.

The new Spider-Man film, which will likely star Asa Butterfield in the title role, will hit theaters on July 28th, 2017.
