Recently, Kingsman: The Golden Circle director Matthew Vaughn confirmed that he’s in talks with Warner Bros. to helm Man of Steel 2. Fans of the superhero-loving director, who previously gave us Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, were thrilled to find out that he might be bringing his unique fast, funny and action-packed style to the DCEU’s Superman sub-franchise, though he hasn’t signed on just yet.
While chatting with Collider though, Vaughn revealed what he’d do with the Last Son of Krypton if he does end up making the movie. As you might expect, the director emphasizes that he would bring the “color” and “light” back to the hero’s world.
“Weirdly if I did do Superman—and I made the mistake of telling someone yesterday I have spoken about it and then wallop (laughs)—I think my main take would be, it’s really boring but make a Superman film. I just don’t feel a proper Superman—I think Donner did it to perfection for that time. Just doing the modern—I wanna do a modern version of the Donner [version]. Go back to the source material… For me Superman is color, feel-good, heroic. He’s a beacon of light in darkness. And that’s what I think Superman should be.”
Though he doesn’t refer to Man of Steel directly, it’s clear that Vaughn is one of many Superman fans who disagreed with Zack Snyder’s dour and gloomy take on the Big Blue Boy Scout in the 2013 movie. While the director’s interpretation of the character undoubtedly has its fans, you can bet that many would agree with Vaughn’s opinion that a future Superman film should look to Richard Donner’s 1978 classic Superman: The Movie for inspiration.
Not only that, but after Wonder Woman proved to be a massive hit earlier this year, it’s likely that Warner Bros. will also be on board with making more movies that share the same optimistic, brighter tone. Could Vaughn’s traditionalist view of Superman land him the Man of Steel 2 job, then? It is possible, and it sounds like negotiations are going well. Still, we could be wrong. After all, in the ever-changing world of the DCEU, anything could happen. As always, watch this space for more.
