The MCU’s Peter Quill aka Star-Lord is like a loose cannon as guessing what he would do next is as easy as trying to predict which DC project is actually safe from James Gunn’s transformation spree. His fickleness, for the lack of a better word, was disastrously highlighted when he let his emotions mess up the heroes’ attempts to subdue Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. While that fiasco can be attributed to his shock over losing the love of his life, a new question about his past plagues MCU fans — why has Peter Quill never made an attempt to find his relatives on Earth?
It’s not like he doesn’t have any Earthbound relatives. Though Meredith Quill died of cancer — courtesy of Ego — her parents and a brother were by her bedside when she took her last breath. In fact, Star-Lord’s grandfather is seen in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, where he is seen trying to escape a deadly extraterrestrial seedling in Missouri that burst when Ego leeched away Peter’s powers to activate them. At the last moment, just when his car is about to be consumed, it all stops and he survives.
As far as we know, Star-Lord was on good terms with her mother’s relatives. Though he ended up flourishing in his role as an intergalactic outlaw, it shouldn’t be forgotten that he was kidnapped by Yondu — he didn’t join him willingly. So, why didn’t he ever try to at least reach out to his grandparents? An MCU fan is trying to find the answer to the same via a Reddit thread.
While there are no concrete answers — and the MCU doesn’t seem inclined to provide any — fans have outlined the most obvious possibility to this anomaly.
This could be a possible reason for the presumed hesitation Star-Lord has toward finding his human relatives. On her deathbed, Meredith Quill had asked her son to hold her hand as she died, but the eight-year-old Peter couldn’t bring himself to look at her and she passed away with her wish unfulfilled.
One fan couldn’t help but speculate how Quill’s family would react if they ever find out that the grandson they lost ages ago has turned into a hero saving lives.
If truth be told, Star-Lord didn’t exactly kickstart a crusade to find daddy dearest either even though he had pegged him guilty for leaving his mother. It was Ego who found him, his son wasn’t really looking forward to a family reunion. It is evident that Star-Lord is happy to let his past stay where it is and has picked the family he chose. But never say never as, who knows maybe Gunn is planning to reunite the Quills in May’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
