With each passing week, Hollywood’s awards corridor is only becoming increasingly crowded, and Lionsgate has added another horse into the race by slating wartime drama Hacksaw Ridge for release on November 4.

Directed by Mel Gibson in his continued comeback effort, Hacksaw Ridge will have Andrew Garfield lead an all-star cast that comprises Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn.

Featuring a script from Robert Schenkkan and Randall Wallace, early buzz for Gibson’s atypical war movie is reportedly through the roof, balancing awards-friendly themes of heroism, faith and rip-roaring action. Chronicling the remarkable true story of Desmond T. Doss, Andrew Garfield will deploy onto the frontlines as the first conscientious objector in U.S. history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Throughout his harrowing term, Doss defied the odds by saving 75 men without firing a gun during the infamous Battle of Okinawa. Even on paper, it’s a pretty awe-inspiring feat, and we’re excited to see how Gibson translates Doss’ bravery onto the screen.

Here’s the logline:

Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss (Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing a gun. Believing that the War was just but killing was nevertheless wrong, he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon.”

Andrew Garfield, who only today became attached to noir thriller Under the Silver Lake, will shun traditional war tactics on the frontlines of Mel Gibson’s period thriller when Hacksaw Ridge opens on November 4.
