Melissa McCarthy has had her share of hits and misses over the past few years. The Heat and Bridesmaids showcased her formidable comedic skills, while Identity Thief left a lot to be desired. But if you’re a fan of McCarthy’s irreverent and at times clumsy humor, then you will want to check out her latest film Tammy, set to hit theatres in July.
Tammy features McCarthy (who also wrote the script) as a woman having a really terrible day. She’s lost her job, totaled her car, and caught her husband in bed with another woman. Her only option for escape is to hitch a ride with her grandmother (Susan Sarandon), who has a good bit of money and wants to see Niagara Falls. Cue a road trip with two very funny women.
The teaser trailer does not give us much in the way of plot, but it certainly establishes a strong tone. McCarthy pumps herself up in a burger joint parking lot to the tune of “Gangsta’s Paradise,” then proceeds to attempt one of the more incompetent stick-ups known to cinema. While this is pretty much McCarthy’s schtick now, her comedic blend of bravado and ineptitude usually pays off. As long as the script is strong and the cast is dedicated, there’s no reason to suspect that this will be anything other than a good piece of entertainment. Hopefully the next trailer will showcase some of the secondary characters, though. I particularly want to see how Sarandon and McCarthy play together.
Directed by Ben Falcone and co-starring Allison Janney, Mark Duplass, Dan Aykroyd, and Kathy Bates, Tammy will come to cinemas on July 2.
